The use of organically arranged brick walls in the design of the Asmalay house,

Named Asmalay, the house was designed by Indian architecture firm Blurring Boundaries,

led by Shreya Parasrampuria and Prashant Dubari.

The 2,000-square-foot (186-square-meter) house is located within a lush tapestry of mango trees in the coastal city of Alibaug near Mumbai.

Blurred Boundaries  I envisioned Asmalai House as a vibrant home to embrace the harmonious interplay between architecture and nature.

While it is not clear where the house begins and ends,

Flowing interior and exterior spaces spark a sense of curiosity and compel users to explore.

The studio took care of the mango trees on the plot and placed curved brick walls around them to design the interior spaces.

The program of the house consists of a balcony, living room,

dining room, kitchen, toilet, bedroom, deck, kitchen garden, biodigestion tank, caretaker and backyard.

From start to finish, the studio has created a thoughtful blend of form and function.

Design features

According to the architects, “The design seeks to create immersive experiences where spatial arrangement,

materials, lighting and color combine to create a sense of harmony.”

The residence was made of natural and recycled materials, inspired by its own context.

The residence incorporates passive design methodologies and positions itself as a celebration of sustainable living.

Design concept revolves around organic curves harmonious with five mango trees on the ground.

The house features an open floor plan and interconnected spaces to provide diversity and adaptability.

Avoiding creating boundaries in the interior, each area flows seamlessly into the next along the gracefully curved walls,

Thus “forming a unified and continuous spatial atmosphere.”

Upon entering, the curved brickwork arouses curiosity,

creating a captivating spatial transformation into multi-functional living and dining areas.

“The dining space blends seamlessly into the open kitchen,

while the common areas maintain a simple yet utilitarian aesthetic.”

“The upper floor, which houses private spaces, maintains a harmonious and soothing color palette,

in continuation of the ground floor,” the office added.

Strategically located with the prevailing direction and winds,

the residence features naturally lit and well-ventilated spaces.

The curvature of the openings is also aligned with the orientation and configuration of existing trees.

While arched brick windows facilitate the circulation of daylight and air,

This promotes a comfortable indoor climate that protects against the rising summer temperatures.
