The Barcelona-based multidisciplinary architectural practice Studio Andrew Trotter has transformed three white-stone cottages
into bed and breakfasts amidst olive trees in the Oria countryside, Puglia, Italy.
Dubbed Borgo Gallana, the project consists of renovating three traditional houses using their original structural systems.
The new version of three houses brings a new look and peace and tranquility to three homes.
While its material palette plays a major role in defining these characteristics,
guests enjoy the cottage-like feel of when they’re inside.
Studio Andrew Trotter has renovated two buildings and designed a courtyard between them, adding two staircases on either side.
Design features
In addition, the studio expanded the existing homes in order to have three freestanding homes.
The first house, named Casa Camino, consists of a king size bed, bathroom with shower,
large living and dining room with beautiful original fireplace, kitchen, private courtyard with bathtub and outdoor shower,
private terrace with outdoor kitchen and dining, stone sofa and garden lemon Tree.
The second house, called Casa Luce, includes a king size bed, bathroom with shower,
living and dining room, large kitchen, private courtyard with bathtub and outdoor shower,
private deck with stone bench and outdoor kitchen.
Casa Limone is the third home offering a king size bed, bathroom with shower, dining and kitchen,
private courtyard with bathtub and outdoor shower, private terrace with outdoor kitchen and dining, stone sofa and lemon tree garden.
The studio also designed a 40 square meter pool on the other side of the land.
Materials used in the implementation of the design
During the construction process, the studio utilized vaulted ceilings and existing concrete floors throughout the property.
Tufo, known as the local sandstone, was chosen as the main material used to build the structures.
In the interiors, the team has also created bespoke solutions such as domestic bathroom sinks and kitchen countertops.
The interiors are furnished and decorated with antique tables, chairs, ceramics and lamps;
and brands such as Frama, Lumina, Bongio, Tine K, Gervasoni, and local cutlery Nicola Fasano.
Studio Andrew Trotter uses a powder-coated black outdoor metal wall lamp for the outdoor areas.
