Uchronia – a Dezeen Awards-nominated studio – graced Cafe Nuances, a Parisian coffee shop owned by the Parisian roaster, with its signature playfully eclectic designs. Located on the Rue du la Tremoille, the single-room coffee shop exudes vivid colors that contrast its bright white facade. The walls and lava stone flooring – a tribute to the gentleness of summer days – are hued in red, orange, and blue gradation, a vision derived from founder Julien Sebban’s recent trip to Tunisia. The entrance to the intimate cafe is bordered by a curved seating bench, upholstered with metallic-effect fabric and contoured by a straight counterpart.

Reconfigurable interlocking tables and low-slung stools fill the shop’s interior as well. Uchronia installed a stainless steel counter against the back wall, complementing the space’s deep orange lacquered shelves, an element frequently present in their other Cafe Nuance branches. To create a dreamlike atmosphere, Uchronia suspended a cluster of spheres painted to match the cafe’s hues from the reflective ceiling. The unusual display consists of “floating balls,” coincidentally resembling Saturn. Similarly, Canadian design duo Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster implemented an optical illusion staircase in their sky-blue Buffalo, New York-based coffee shop.
