New York-based architecture firm LMCA Design has unveiled the design for Deji Plaza Xuzhou in China.

Inspired by the complex root system of the Banyan tree as an ideological guide to the creation of the project.

The mixed-use project, named Deji Plaza Xuzhou, is located in the heart of the Central Business District in Xuzhou,

China and covers a total of 351,206 square meters.

The complex currently includes two 60-storey luxury residential towers and an 11-storey retail podium.

and large landscaped spaces to enhance Chuzhou’s urban green heart.

The design consists of undulating organically formed towers flanked on both sides,

which becomes a horizontal expression of the earthy Italian travertine slabs that line the podium facade.

According to the company, the building symbolizes the layers of soil around the roots of the banyan tree.

Having been dormant for years following the halt of initial build by a previous developer,

LCMA Design has been commissioned by the property’s new owner to step in and complete the ambitious project.

At that time, the foundations of the twin towers had already been laid, and the platform was partially constructed.

These restrictions mainly apply to the foundations of the 60-storey twin towers.

which have already been placed with poles driven deep into the earth. While it cannot be practically changed,

Li Min Ching was informed that anything over the height of the 11-storey tower could be modified according to his own design, up to the 60th floor.

In terms of the retail podium, only the part connected to the towers has been built,

with the bulk of the space remaining to be developed.

Root regeneration

Due to the site’s prominent position as a gateway between the urban core of the city to the south,

and a central park to the north,

LMCA sought to visually connect the front end of the project with the city’s green initiatives.

This process extends the flow of green space across a public plaza at ground level,

The beautifully manicured landscape forms part of a master plan for urban green spaces designed by environmental design institute Ohtori Consultants.

In keeping with the theme of the city’s expanding green philosophy,

and the environmental sustainability goals of the China Green Star rating system (the project was rated 2 out of 3 stars),

And Li Min Ching felt that the Deji Plaza Xuzhou project should reflect the natural elements around it in some shape or form.

He began to imagine organic forms and textures that could be architecturally adapted to the project,

and in the process adopted the banyan tree as an ideological guide.

Accordingly, the new design of the LMCA would draw aesthetic and functional inspiration from the organic forms

and actions of the banyan tree and its complex root system.

“The banyan tree is not born from its own seed,” he explained,

“but rather plants an existing old tree and rebirths it into a new, elegant, organic form.” Massive transformation.
