Design Features

The masterplan was developed by UN-Habitat, Metropolitan Busan, Republic of Korea,

and Oceanix Blue Tech, New York.

As a flexible, flood-resistant prototype, the scheme is called Oceanix Busan.

The project proposes a framework for a scalable and scalable floating master plan

that integrates groundbreaking new technologies for coastal cities facing climate urgency, scarcity and rising sea levels.

The project site was announced in November 2021, as Busan, since the city was conceived as the “ideal choice for prototype deployment”.

With a population of 3.4 million, Busan is the second largest city in the Republic of Korea.

The city is also one of the most important marine cities of the 21st century,

making it a suitable city to deploy a prototype of a sustainable floating city with its marine engineering capabilities.

Design shape

The masterplan, envisioned as a sustainable and resilient floating community,

consists of interconnected neighborhoods covering a total of 6.3 hectares to be able to host 12,000 people.

Each neighborhood also features low-rise buildings, and is designed to serve a specific purpose:

living, research, and housing.

Each district will also include between 30,000 and 40,000 square meters of mixed-use programmes.

The units will be built on floating platforms, connected to the ground by connecting bridges

framing the blue lagoon sheltered from floating entertainment, art and performance sites.

Low-rise buildings will also be defined by their soft lines and feature balconies for indoor and outdoor living, aiming to revitalize the vibrant network of public spaces.

Design goals

Oceanix Busan aims to transform and adapt organically over time,

with the masterplan initially going with three platforms accommodating 12,000 residents and visitors,

but it will have the potential to expand to more than 20 platforms over time.

The floating platforms will accompany a series of production hubs with photovoltaic panels and greenhouses

for growing food – which can expand and contract over time based on Busan’s needs.

Oceanix Busan will also have six integrated systems: zero waste and circular systems,

closed-loop water systems, food, net zero energy, innovative mobility, and coastal habitat regeneration.

These interconnected systems are designed to generate 100% of the required operational power,

on site, through floating PV panels and rooftops.

Likewise, each neighborhood will treat and replenish its own water, reduce and recycle resources,

and provide innovative urban agriculture.
