W Awards 2027 recognize architecture and research by women and non-binary practitioners, while the research category is open to people of any gender. The programme is run in partnership by The Architectural Review and the Architects’ Journal and has three categories with distinct eligibility rules.

Eligibility differs sharply by category. The Moira Gemmill prize is global but limited to female and non-binary practice founders born after 1 January 1982; the MJ Long prize is limited to UK-based female and non-binary project architects of buildings completed after 1 January 2024; the research prize is global and open to individuals of any gender or collectives.

Submission and review

Applicants select a category in the online system, answer its required questions and may save an incomplete entry before final submission. Self-entrants upload a portfolio of recent projects; nominators provide available information so the organizer can request a portfolio from the nominee. Research entries may support their case with images and PDFs containing drawings or image series.

All entries are first reviewed by the AR and AJ editorial teams. Shortlisted Moira Gemmill and MJ Long entrants present to international judging panels. The official pages reviewed do not yet publish the 2027 juror names or detailed rights language; entrants should read the platform terms before completing the entry.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The W Awards separate three kinds of contribution—practice leadership, project responsibility and research—rather than forcing them into one ranking. The category-specific thresholds are clear and the absence of a fee reduces access barriers for eligible entrants.

The programme offers publication and professional recognition rather than a stated cash award. Entrants should therefore assess the value of editorial exposure against the time needed for a portfolio and presentation, while checking the final jury and platform terms when they are published.
