Home » Competitions » Warming Huts: An Art + Architecture Competition On Ice v.2023

FORMAT FOR COMPETITION:

Installation of Art and Warming Huts

From submissions of concepts for a warming hut or art installation, three teams will be chosen as winners of the WARMING HUTS COMPETITION: Arts + Architecture Competition on Ice. The winning entries will be installed along Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Nestaweya River Trail, which runs along the Red and Assiniboine rivers. The winning designs will be chosen by a jury based on their inventive use of materials, ability to provide shelter, poetics of assembly and form, integration with the environment, and simplicity of construction.

Requirements for Submission:

2:00 p.m. CST on Tuesday, October 4, 2022.

Site:

At The Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the huts or installations are situated along the Nestaweya River Trail (www.theforks.com). The Forks is at the confluence of the Red River and the Assiniboine River in the heart of Winnipeg. The two rivers’ confluence has historically made the region a well-liked gathering location for more than 6,000 years. With more than four million visitors each year, the place has recently grown to be a well-liked hangout for both tourists and residents.

The rivers are an alternative route to get to downtown during the winter months on foot, bikes, skateboards, and skis. There are chances to play hockey, curling, and many more sports. Additionally, the Nestaweya River Trail connects Winnipeg’s communities and has numerous access spots. Regular grooming and safety checks are on the River Trail. Additional protection will be provided at night in an effort to deter loitering and damage to the huts.

Winnipeg’s weather may be very chilly during the months of January and February, with lows of – 30C. Teams will consider how solar radiation, wind chill, and the ever-changing topography of the snow-covered river may affect them. At the end of January, the Assiniboine and Red Rivers can have ice that is up to 1 meter thick.
