Swedish studio White Arkitekter has completed the Observation Tower Kärven, located in a nature reserve in Getterön. This 12-meter-tall, seven-meter-wide tower features a hyperboloid structure made up of 140 timber beams combined with metal rings, designed to resemble “a bundle of twisted straws.”

Design and Construction

The tower’s design, described as having a “visually striking simplicity,” was developed using parametric modeling and calculation software. Lead architect Lukas Nordström emphasized the integration of architectural and structural design, creating a structure where architecture and construction seamlessly intersect. This approach ensured that the design was both functional and aesthetically compelling from the outset.

Structural Features

The tower’s hybrid timber and metal structure facilitated quick on-site assembly. Each beam was installed in approximately two minutes, with the entire assembly process taking just over a week. At ground level, an angular metal-framed opening provides access to the tower’s sheltered interior, showcasing the intricate wooden framework.

Interior and Views

Inside the tower, a central metal spiral staircase leads to an open-air observation deck at the top. This deck, encircled by a balustrade of rising timber beams, offers panoramic views of the surrounding nature reserve. A geometric bench wraps around the central staircase, enhancing the functionality and comfort of the space.

Aesthetic and Impact

The timber beams create distinctive patterns and shadows, adding a dynamic visual element to the tower. The use of familiar timber dimensions contributes to a sense of scale and tactile engagement, making the structure both a visual and experiential highlight of the reserve.

Opening and Recognition

The design won Varberg Municipality’s competition in 2019 and officially opened on August 30, 2024. White Arkitekter’s Observation Tower Kärven stands as a testament to innovative timber construction and thoughtful design in harmony with nature.
