With the start of the new year, many of us set goals and intentions to enhance our physical and mental health in the coming months, and perhaps beyond. Among the popular choices to achieve this goal is practicing yoga, which offers comprehensive benefits for both the body and mind.
A 200-Year-Old Spiral Staircase: A Spiritual Journey to the Yoga Studio
A 200-year-old spiral staircase leads to a yoga studio that radiates calm and contemplation. This staircase is not just a means of ascent, but a ritualistic path that enhances the mental and spiritual preparation needed to enter the unique studio space.

Alex Schatzberg: A Pioneer of Ashtanga Yoga in New York
Alex Schatzberg, based in New York, is one of the prominent Ashtanga yoga experts. Born in California but with deep family roots in New York, Schatzberg moved to the city to attend New York University (NYU). It was here that he first discovered his passion for yoga.
Initially, he practiced yoga in the same East Village loft that later became his own studio, New Vibe Yoga, which combines historical and contemporary elements, reflecting Schatzberg’s vision of offering a yoga experience that blends tradition with innovation.

New Vibe Yoga Studio in East Village
New Vibe Yoga is located in a townhouse on St. Marks Place, built in 1833. This building is distinguished by several unique architectural features, including a 200-year-old spiral staircase. This staircase serves as a path that enhances the journey toward the studio space. Alex Schatzberg says, “There is yogic symbolism in the spiral. Anyone who climbs this staircase knows they are in a very unique and special place.”

Contemporary Design with Spirituality
New Vibe Yoga offers an inspiring environment that blends comfort and beauty, enriching the yoga experience and connecting it deeply with both the spirit and nature. The space is designed with elements that evoke peace, such as the morning light reflecting off the wood, creating a warm glow that harmonizes with the flickering flames in the open fireplace. During storms, the sound of rain falling on the skylights creates a soothing rhythmic melody.

Schatzberg’s Journey with Yoga
Like many Americans, Alex Schatzberg began his yoga journey with Vinyasa, a popular style that emerged in the 1970s and involves linking various movements in a flowing series. As his passion for the practice grew, he began to explore its deeper roots. “I started realizing there was more to this yoga. I wanted to figure out: Where did all this come from? What was the root practice?” Schatzberg recalls.
Through research and curiosity, Schatzberg discovered the deep essence of yoga, which greatly influenced his teaching style, blending authenticity with innovation. This led him to Ashtanga, a more authentic and pure practice from which Vinyasa originates. Schatzberg found a local teacher who had studied under the renowned Indian guru K. Pattabhi Jois, who played a significant role in popularizing yoga as an aerobic exercise in the U.S. Schatzberg spent six years immersed in an apprenticeship-style training program to understand the traditional Ashtanga method.

Yoga is Not Just Exercise, but a Life Experience
Alex Schatzberg describes his philosophy of yoga: “Yoga is not something to be thought about or talked about. It’s something to be experienced.” Schatzberg has a comprehensive approach to the practice, guiding his students to experience deep connections between the body and mind.

The Experience at New Vibe Yoga Studio
New Vibe Yoga classes are more than just physical exercises. They aim to build a cohesive community, increase self-awareness, foster mindfulness of others, and cultivate an appreciation for the world around us. Practices such as carrying wood up the spiral staircase to fuel the open fireplace or chanting together in Sanskrit at the beginning and end of each session are not mandatory for students, but they are intended to create a deeper connection with the philosophy of yoga.

A Holistic Lifestyle
Alex Schatzberg literally lives and breathes yoga. He spends most of his time at New Vibe Yoga, starting his classes at 7 a.m. and finishing at 8 p.m. He has no time or need for a TV, cooks in the small kitchen adjacent to the studio, and sleeps in a small bedroom connected to the main room, which is filled with artwork, books, and personal objects he has collected over the years.

Running his own studio allows him to fully control the environment, from the eucalyptus scent at the entrance to the soft lighting in the studio, creating an experience that feels like welcoming people into his home and providing them with a sense of relaxation. As Schatzberg says: “Yoga is not something to be thought about or talked about, but something to be experienced.”
