Exploring Emerging Landscapes
The term “landscape” encompasses a spectrum of meanings across various disciplines, reflecting its complexity and diversity. Geographer James Duncan defines it as both the visual appearance of a region and the collection of objects forming that appearance. Architect Patrick Nuttgens expands this definition, describing landscape as both a physical environment and an intellectual construct that shapes human existence over time. Edward Relph furthers the understanding by emphasizing its dynamic blend of natural and cultural elements, influenced by historical, social, and ecological processes.
In the Anthropocene era, humans possess unprecedented power to alter ecosystems, climates, and geological structures, effectively merging the natural with the artificial. Despite this, urban practices remain predominantly human-centered, overlooking the interconnected challenges of environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, food insecurity, and rising inequalities. This context demands innovative approaches to urban design that integrate technology, nature, and society to achieve global sustainability and resilience.
The Avani Essay Prize 2024 calls for an in-depth exploration of Emerging Landscapes—a concept that bridges multiple disciplines to address urban transitions. Participants are encouraged to analyze these evolving patterns, challenge traditional norms, and envision future landscapes shaped by advancing technologies and societal changes.
