House Design Blending with Natural Surroundings

Where an old bungalow once stood now rests a contemporary architectural masterpiece. The architects at Platform 5 have replaced a former bungalow in Norfolk, England, with a stunning family home named Backwater, a dwelling that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings beside an isolated lake.

The design is a celebration of local identity. The structure is arranged as three low-slung bays beneath black-stained roofs, a clear nod to the traditional boat sheds dotted along the canals of the Norfolk Broads. Unified timber cladding, treated with shou sugi ban (a Japanese charring technique), enhances this traditional silhouette, while expansive glazing frames panoramic views of the tranquil water.

The house is designed to coexist with its environment, raised above the waterline to allow floodwaters to pass freely beneath it. The remote location necessitated fully off-grid systems, including solar panels, a wood-burning stove, a sewage treatment plant, and a water well. To facilitate construction in this challenging site, materials were transported by barge, making a lightweight timber frame a practical and ideal solution.

The arrival sequence begins with a separate boat shed on the left, while the main house sits to the right. A landscaped ramp planted with native flora leads to the front door, creating a welcoming approach for visitors.

Upon entry, the eye is immediately drawn to a sculptural spiral staircase combining black metal, white finishes, and natural wood. This artistic piece not only anchors the entrance but also sets the home’s aesthetic tone, marrying organic warmth with contemporary boldness.

From the hallway, a large barn door slides open to reveal the heart of the home: the open-plan living spaces. This functional gateway acts as a striking statement piece connecting the private and public zones.

The kitchen and dining area form the core of the home. The dining space features comfortable built-in banquette seating alongside a large wooden table, perfect for family gatherings. Opposite, the kitchen stands out with its elegant black cabinets and a wide central island with open shelving, combining functional elegance with easy access.

Extending from the dining area is a spacious wooden deck that acts as a natural extension of the living room, complete with a lounge area and a private boat dock, allowing the family to enjoy the lake from under a deep canopy.

Adjacent to the kitchen, a double-height living space is flooded with natural light from large windows that follow the pitched roofline, offering breathtaking views of the water and greenery. The room is divided into a seating area facing a sleek steel-clad fireplace and a cozy library nook at the rear, complete with a built-in daybed and a desk for work or reading.

In the bathroom, vertically laid white tiles enhance the sense of height, while a long window floods the space with daylight and offers views of the lake even from the bathtub.

The spiral staircase leads to the upper floor, which houses a study, an additional bedroom, and a second bathroom. One bedroom features a smaller window paired with built-in seating, designed for quiet moments of contemplation overlooking the landscape.
