“Beyond Sight – The Blind Experience” is a revolutionary museum design competition organized by Archiol Competitions. This initiative aims to challenge conventional architectural norms by focusing on accessibility, inclusivity, and sensory engagement. It calls for participants to envision museum spaces that prioritize tactile, auditory, olfactory, and spatial interactions over visual experiences, fostering inclusivity for the blind and visually impaired.

This competition is not only a platform for architectural innovation but also a medium to promote empathy and understanding. Designers are encouraged to rethink the museum experience by creating immersive environments where visitors of all abilities can connect with art in meaningful and non-visual ways.

Objective

The competition seeks designs for a museum environment that immerses visitors in multisensory experiences, enabling engagement through touch, sound, smell, and spatial awareness. The goal is to promote inclusivity, ensuring that art and culture are accessible to everyone, regardless of visual ability. Entries should emphasize accessibility, sustainability, and innovative solutions, creating a space that is both functional and memorable.

Building Programme

  • Accessibility: Designs must ensure barrier-free access, with clear and intuitive layouts catering to the needs of visually impaired visitors.
  • Tactile and Sensory Experiences: Incorporate elements such as textured surfaces, interactive displays, and audio-guided features to enrich the visitor experience.
  • Wayfinding: Employ tactile maps, auditory cues, and Braille signage to assist navigation.
  • Spatial Organization: Optimize layouts for ease of movement and include spacious circulation paths and comfortable seating areas.
  • Universal Design Principles: Address diverse needs with features such as adjustable seating, accessible restrooms, and alternative information formats.
