Call for Entries: 1871 Los Angeles Chinese Massacre Memorial

The lynching of 18 Chinese by a vigilante mob in Los Angeles on October 24, 1871. This was the most giant mass killing of any kind in LA history and the largest Chinesemassacre in California history. LA issued a Request for Ideas (RFI) inviting artists, architects, and designers to submit ideas for a permanent physical memorial.

The RFI’s key details are as follows:

  • Submissions must be by October 12, 2022, at 5 p.m.
  • Moreover, the initial submission consists of a one-page conceptual statement, one page of drawings or renderings, and a straightforward entry form outlining the applicant’s background and experience.
  • Two optional Q&A sessions (on September 12 and October 3) and two optional walking tours of locations connected to the atrocity (on September 24 and September 28) are being offered to aid potential candidates in preparing their applications.
  • Furthermore, applicants may submit their responses to the RFI either individually. Or as part of a team with partners/collaborators who would each contribute distinct skills or talents to the project.
  • The race or nationality of the designer is neither a preference nor an expectation. The review of submissions will not consider an applicant’s age, race, nationality, occupation, or geography.
  • Additionally, the evaluation panel will choose up to five responses to receive a $15,000 stipend each. The goal of the stipend is to help the chosen responses refine their concepts to the point where they are ready for public presentations in Los Angeles.
