Design Inspired by the Surrounding Landscape
Mexican architecture firm Estudio Cristina Grappin has completed Casa Quinto Sol, a large stone house designed to embrace the coastal breezes between the courtyard and the Pacific Ocean in Punta Mita, Mexico.
With a total area of 2,440 square meters, the residence is described by the studio as an “ode to its surroundings.” The design integrates harmoniously into the verdant cliffs descending towards the Pacific Ocean, creating pathways that reveal the beauty of nature.
A Site-Centered Design with Two Pavilion Forms
According to Cristina Grappin, the 1.3-acre site is the “true protagonist” of the house. The design features two pavilion-like structures that blend with the slope of the land without obstructing views of the ocean or the distant Cerro del Mono (Monkey Hill).
The residence is surrounded by endemic plants that form a private jungle, using local stone and vernacular construction techniques. This creates the effect of the house appearing as though it is an organic part of the natural landscape.
Two Distinct Pavilions for Privacy and Connection
The 11-bedroom home is divided into two sections: a low-slung, transparent pavilion containing the public spaces on the waterside, and a partially submerged sleeping block with two levels of bedrooms.
The larger pavilion wraps around a central courtyard that serves as an enclosed oasis and a transitional space between the bedrooms and the breezy living and dining areas. These spaces open via folding glass walls for natural cross ventilation, creating an ideal connection between indoors and outdoors.

Connecting Every Space to the Outdoors
One of the key features of Casa Quinto Sol’s design is its direct connection between interior and exterior spaces, emphasizing ocean views or the peaceful interior patios.

The stone exterior complements the grey marble floors, which extend both indoors and outdoors. The natural-toned plaster on the walls serves as thermal insulation, and local tropical wood accents the interior.
Entertainment Spaces and Privacy Features
In addition to the core living spaces, the residence includes several entertainment areas. The basement, located beneath the bedrooms, houses a cinema, a professional bowling alley, and a game room, providing privacy and sound control.
A large deck with an infinity-edge pool runs along the waterside, culminating in a wooden pergola that houses an outdoor living and dining area. A fire pit located on the roof offers a relaxing spot to enjoy the best views of the ocean.
Interior Design Reflecting Mexican Craftsmanship
Despite its extensive program, the design of Casa Quinto Sol maintains a distinctly human scale, creating an intimate and warm atmosphere that invites contemplation of the surrounding natural beauty.
Most of the furnishings were created by Mexican and Latin American designers and artisans. Grappin’s studio integrated interior design, landscaping, and the architecture of the pavilions to create a cohesive narrative that defines the character of the project.
