British architecture firm Foster + Partners has completed a new sustainable headquarters

for the Hungarian multinational oil and gas company MOL Group in Budapest, Hungary.

Named MOL’s main building, the 28-storey building is located in the south of Budapest

and was completed in collaboration with Budapest-based architecture firm Finta Studio.

The building integrates the company’s operations in Budapest into one location,

and the headquarters is designed in line with the company’s sustainable vision of 2030,

providing a strong embodiment of the office of the future.

Foster + Partners’ architecture, structural and environmental engineering team aims

to set new standards for sustainable projects in the city and push the boundaries of workplace design.

Design features

The tower and podium are combined into a unique shape, to create a unified campus enhanced by nature.

The office spaces are connected to lush gardens that seamlessly connect the floors together,

encouraging collaboration and relaxation.

While the lower floors house restaurants, gymnasium, conference center and other staff facilities,

flexible office spaces are arranged on the upper floors.

Foster + Partners is adding plenty of green space in the heart of the building,

from the central atrium to the rooftop, bringing employers closer to nature with their workspace.

The building also acts as a ‘social catalyst’, providing spaces for collaboration,

relaxation and inspiration.

Service centers are offset to create large flexible areas that encourage collaborative work patterns.

The office building incorporates the latest technology to control light levels, temperature and views,

so that these workspaces can be precisely calibrated to create the perfect working environment.

The interiors consist of an inspiring, light-filled space for people to work in.

All occupants also have direct contact with the outside environment providing daylight and views.

Application of low and zero carbon technologies

The building applies low and zero carbon technologies,

such as photovoltaic panels integrated on the roof, and ground heat pumps.

It features a gray water recycling system and a rain water harvesting system.

Heating and cooling is provided via a radiant panel system, which enhances indoor environmental quality and comfort,

while allowing the central station system to operate more efficiently compared to conventional systems.

The heating and cooling plant system also integrates with the district heating system for added support and flexibility.

In addition to cooling towers for “free cooling” when outdoor conditions are suitable.

 

 

The design seeks to maintain the relationships between life and work,

as part of the urban experience, where people can walk or cycle to work.

The building is on track to achieve excellent LEED Platinum and BREEAM certifications,

setting a new benchmark for both Budapest and Hungary.

The design of the building makes the most of its urban context to drive a sustainable response.
