The CREATIVE HACK AWARD was launched in 2013 as an initiative to identify and support emerging creators with groundbreaking ideas and ambitions. Organized by WIRED Japan, the competition serves as a platform for innovators who aim to challenge boundaries and introduce fresh perspectives. Now in its 12th year, this award continues to highlight the spirit of hacking—described not only as a desire to enhance something beloved but also as a bold attempt to disrupt or transform what one finds intolerable.

This year’s edition, the CREATIVE HACK AWARD 2024, invites participants to explore the concept of “HACK” from a creative standpoint. With no restrictions on the medium or theme, the competition calls for creative demonstrations, visualizations, or representations of the hacker’s attitude. Applicants must explain the “What,” “Why,” and “How” behind their project, emphasizing the change or disruption they seek to bring. Entry to the award is free and open to individuals across the globe, without limitations on age, gender, or nationality. Whether submitting individually or in groups, applicants can present up to five works.

What to Submit

Participants are asked to present a piece that reflects a hacking mindset. Whether it’s a visual demonstration or an artistic representation, the project must express a clear message of transformation. The key aspect of this award is to clearly define the “What,” or the element being hacked, the “Why,” which explains the motivation, and the “How,” showcasing the approach or technique used in the project. This triple-layered explanation ensures that the work not only surprises but also resonates with a deeper meaning.

Eligibility and Criteria

The CREATIVE HACK AWARD 2024 imposes no thematic or material restrictions. Applicants from any background can participate, whether seasoned professionals or first-time creators. However, organizations are not permitted to enter. The evaluation process focuses on three main factors. First, the project should offer a Wow Factor—a sense of surprise or innovation that distinguishes it from ordinary works. Secondly, the social aspect of the project is vital, assessing whether the submission raises meaningful questions or addresses significant issues. Lastly, the form of the submission, or how well the chosen medium complements the message, is an important criterion.

Award Categories and Recognition

In this year’s competition, several awards will be granted to recognize exceptional talent. The Grand Prize will go to the best overall submission, followed by the Second Prize for another outstanding entry. Additional recognition will be given through three Special Prizes, as well as the Finalist Club Prize, Sony Prize, and Wacom Prize. These awards not only celebrate the creativity of participants but also encourage a broader conversation about hacking culture in the creative world.

Conclusion

The CREATIVE HACK AWARD 2024 continues its tradition of pushing boundaries and inspiring the next generation of innovators. With its open-ended theme and flexible guidelines, the competition invites creators to rethink, disrupt, and challenge the status quo. By providing a platform where visionaries can express their ideas, WIRED Japan reinforces its commitment to fostering creativity and innovation on a global scale.
