Plans have been approved for a new art museum designed by Burkinabè architect Diébédo Francis Kéré in Las Vegas, USA. The 90,000-square-foot (8,350 square meter) Las Vegas Museum of Art will be located in Symphony Park, Downtown Las Vegas, on a site currently used as a parking lot.
Design Overview
The city council has approved the initial plans for the museum, and the first rendering of the building concept has been revealed. Designed by the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect Kéré, the museum will feature two floors of gallery space elevated above a lobby and entrance area. The galleries will extend over the lower floor, creating a sheltered entrance area and transforming the adjoining square into a welcoming “front porch” for the museum.
Design Inspiration
According to Kéré, the design integrates the beauty of the Nevada desert with local building principles. He described the project as a blend of the desert environment and the collaborative spirit of the Las Vegas Museum of Art, aiming to create a space that brings art and joy to the community.
Collaboration and Future Plans
The museum will be developed in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), which will provide art and expertise in hosting exhibitions and programs. It will be situated next to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and the Discovery Children’s Museum, contributing to a growing cultural district in Symphony Park. Construction is expected to commence before February 2027.
