The EDGE Awards 2026 is part of the architecture program of EDGE Architecture Festival Budapest. The awards platform highlights projects which attempt to transform architectural and design boundaries through their selected projects which will be demonstrated in direct public presentations.

The 2026 FRESH MEAT – VISIONS OF TOMORROW Student Award introduces its first Student Award category. The category aims to assess student work which extends beyond traditional academic requirements by developing new ideas through conceptual and experimental methods.

Intent

The competition seeks to discover new architectural educators who demonstrate their work through clear concepts and original designs and critical research. The organization provides a public space which allows people to present their work and engage in professional discussions.

Purpose

The Student Award functions to honor students who develop innovative proposals which challenge established methods through their new ideas about spatial design and social interactions and theoretical concepts. The evaluation focuses on architectural concept strength and design relevance and innovative features and presentation quality.

Requirements

The opportunity is available to student projects which involve architectural work and related design fields.

Projects can include conceptual designs and speculative projects and research-based work or design activities.

The architectural design needs to be expressed through two essential components which are the architectural concept and critical framework.

Five shortlisted projects per category will be selected for live presentation in Budapest on 18–19 June 2026.

Jury

The international jury panel will assess submissions according to their conceptual clarity and original content and critical relevance and presentation quality. The organization has not released the names of specific jury members who will participate in the event.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The EDGE Awards 2026 Student Award exists as a festival-based award because it operates through the EDGE Architecture Festival Budapest. The competition rules and judging procedures exist in documented form but the competition judges remain unknown to the public, which creates a situation of limited openness. The competition exists to assess university students through academic research and their experimental projects. The competition requires no entry fees and participants receive awards which include both recognition and live presentation, along with an undisclosed cash award. Visibility and portfolio development represent the actual advantage, whereas implementation remains unachievable. The jury possesses international expertise, yet without specific details, assessment standards become impossible to evaluate completely.

Conclusion

The EDGE Awards 2026 Student category expands the festival’s framework to include experimental academic work within a professional setting. The competition establishes professional visibility through its combination of live presentations and jury evaluations which emerging practitioners desire. The evaluation process of most festival awards depends on how well participants showcase their work during public events, which creates a connection between recognition and their actual attendance at events. The initiative nonetheless reflects ongoing efforts to connect architectural education with broader professional discourse.
