TerraViva has launched the ELIAVA BAZAAR competition, aimed at reimagining the complex of Eliava Market, located in the heart of Tbilisi, Georgia. The competition offers a total prize fund of up to 8,000 €, which will be awarded to winners selected by an international jury panel. The panel includes Dimitri Shapakidze from the Laboratory of Architecture #3, Yasamin Mayyas from WORKac, Isabell Enssle Rios from TSPA, and Juan José Vargas Castillo from TAP, among others.
Brief
Eliava Market, a bustling market in Tbilisi, is known for its intricate network of pathways, intertwining commerce and culture, and its vibrant community. However, recent discussions about relocating this iconic market have raised concerns among its long-time vendors and patrons. The competition’s objective is to preserve Eliava’s existing location, a place deeply rooted in Tbilisi’s narrative and cherished by generations. The goal is not only to address immediate concerns but also to safeguard a significant part of Tbilisi’s cultural identity.
Prizes and Mentions
The first prize winner will receive 3,000 €, the second prize winner will be awarded 1,500 €, and the third prize winner will receive 1,000 €. Additionally, ten golden mentions will be awarded, with each recipient receiving 250 €. Another ten honorable mentions will be recognized with a coupon for a free competition. Lastly, thirty finalists will have their proposals published on the TerraViva channels.
Guidelines
Participants are encouraged to explore ways to redesign the market layout, enhancing its functionality and improving traffic flow while elevating the shopping experience. The focus should be on creating flexible spaces that can accommodate a variety of activities. A key aspect of the competition is the integration of green spaces and urban elements within the market. These spaces should contribute to urban biodiversity and offer visitors a respite from the lively commercial environment. For a deeper exploration of the design, participants are invited to focus on the layout and design of individual shops or stalls, considering each as part of a larger mosaic that contributes to the overall experience.
Requested Material
Submissions must include two A1 panels, measuring 59.4 by 84.1 centimeters, in landscape orientation. Each submission must also be accompanied by a brief text of 250 to 500 words, describing the proposal.

The jury for the competition includes several prominent figures in the field of architecture. Dimitri Shapakidze, from the Laboratory of Architecture #3 in Tbilisi, Georgia, Yasamin Mayyas from WORKac in New York, USA, Giovanni Aurino from OD’A Officina d’Architettura in Naples, Italy, and Isabell Enssle Rios from TSPA in Berlin, Germany, are among the distinguished members. Also on the jury are Nodar Kvanchiani from Altertopos in Tbilisi, Georgia, Manuela Rosso from Studio 3Mark in Cuneo, Italy, Zhaoxiong Han from Gensler in Los Angeles, USA, and Juan José Vargas Castillo from TAP in Medellin, Colombia.
Schedule
The competition opens on September 16th. Early registration, with a fee of 69 €, will be available from September 16th until November 22nd. Standard registration, at a fee of 89 €, will be available from November 22nd to December 20th. Late registration, costing 99 €, will be open from December 20th to January 24th. The submission deadline is set for January 24th, at 3:00 pm CET. The winners of the competition will be announced on February 24th.
Requirements and Eligibility
The competition is open to a wide range of participants, including architects, landscape designers, interior designers, students, enthusiasts, engineers, artists, and makers, as well as anyone with an interest in the fields of architecture and urban regeneration. Participants have the option to join the competition either individually or as part of a team.
