Various Associates has commissioned the renovation of its beach club,

the first hotel to open in China, known as The Sanya EDITION.

The hotel’s aesthetics are defined by lush greenery,

textured materials in original colors, and soft lighting.

Design features

Considering the contextual parameters, Various Associates aims to create a

“nice and cozy place”, providing visitors with social connection

while incorporating Sanya’s attractive landscape and EDITION aesthetics into the design.

The main goal of the project was to create a low-impact design, and for this reason,

the new structures blend with the existing landscape and protected trees on site.

The azure Haitang Bay echoed through the coconut groves.

The beach club also appears to “grow” from a site surrounded by existing vegetation,

which is the soul of the new space.

Active place

The hotel pursued creative design strategies, hoping to rejuvenate and revitalize the quiet and slightly deserted outdoor beach area.

With the introduction of modern and youth life activities,

so as to turn it into a landmark in Haitang Bay and even in the wider city.

The studio has renovated the Beach Club to provide a strong connection

between the various activity areas in the surrounding areas, creating a lively and joyful encounter.

The studio has carefully designed all the interventions so that bar-goers,

sunbathers, swimmers and volleyball players cannot be prevented from each other.

The open space allows users to throw themselves into an emotional atmosphere,

without removing the sense of limitation that makes them comfortable.

Continuous bamboo blinds give a sense of comfort and sleep “under the tree”,

which became the design concept of the project.

According to the studio, the trees create a “relaxing, uninhibited space” on the beach.

The woven bamboo structures consist of five interlocking canopies,

resembling trees and suggesting different heights and shapes.

The trees blend beautifully into the lush nature thanks to the curved features that are organic and natural.

While natural coconut groves and new structures sprout around the sunken stalls,

new bamboo trees are anchored to the ground via their “stumps”.

Which appear to rise naturally with preserved plants.

Comfortable and unrestricted space

Described as wide and naturally curved ‘tree canopies’, the trees also provide ample protection for club guests,

while the space between each canopy inadvertently brings the surrounding greenery into the view.

Each “tree” canopy has a zigzag shape, and the cluster canopy structures form beautiful,

continuous lines that generate a well-ordered spatial rhythm that blends with nature.

Each structure is rendered as a stand-alone work of bamboo weaving,

to ensure pure visual impact, which takes days of on-site work by several experienced craftsmen.

The studio has also designed the structures at a certain height,

so guests can use the curtains as the perfect backdrop for a photo shoot.

A main bar counter has been created in the center of the site in the shape of a giant box,

which generates circulation around the bar so that bartenders can better cater to guests’ needs.

To create these trees, the studio used the bamboo weaving method,

which carries the typical impression of tropical cities.

The design team deliberately chose natural and locally sourced materials,

to represent the island city and to enable the new exterior structures to adapt to natural changes.

And the selection of materials in the studio was not only based on texture,

but also on the quality of being nature-friendly.

As the studio explained, “Natural bamboo and wood build the structures,

and recycled gravel washing creates warm, textured sidewalks.

All contribute to a sustainable design project committed to protecting the environment,

while unique seating and kiosks under the suites allow guests to enjoy a drink of water.

The cool breeze, light, music and wine create a dynamic atmosphere inviting hotel guests and tourists to participate in it.

Each kiosk has its own exclusive waterfront hammock, allowing guests to interact with the sun and water in a private enclosed space and enjoy the beautiful view inside the hotel.

Night passion

Due to the natural skin of the tightly interwoven bamboo structures,

sunlight can penetrate the structures during the day.

When the lights are turned on at night, the steel structure is wrapped in strips of bamboo,

which stretch out like leaf patterns, revealing themselves to guests.

The canopy transforms into a giant banana leaf when one looks up, revealing the beauty of the structure.

After sunset, the fantastic nightlife begins at the Beach Club,

with the light emitting upwards from the “tree trunks”.

To energize the space, wide curtains block the light and separate it from other areas of the hotel to minimize the effect on the calm of the seaside.

The unique color and texture of the woven bamboo structures are paired with diffused light,

to create a nighttime ambience appreciated by the hotel, adding a touch of romance and warmth to the space.
