Ethiopia has inaugurated the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile. This marks one of the most significant architectural and engineering landmarks in Africa. The construction journey spanned over a decade.

A structure reshaping the river

The dam rises 170 meters high and stretches 1,800 meters in length. It forms a monumental structure that has transformed the natural landscape of the region. Its design relied on an immense body of roller-compacted concrete, exceeding 10.7 million cubic meters. This makes it the largest gravity dam of its kind on the continent.

An artificial lake the size of a city

Behind the dam, an artificial lake now extends for 172 kilometers. It has a storage capacity of nearly 74 billion cubic meters of water.
