Lagos Biennial 2026
November 14 @ 8:00 am - December 6 @ 5:00 pm
free
The 5th edition of the Lagos Biennial will take place from November 14 to December 6, 2026, in Lagos, Nigeria, under the theme The Museum of Things Unseen. The biennial explores hidden histories, institutional critique, and speculative approaches to the traditional museum model, inviting audiences to reconsider how art, memory, and cultural heritage are collected, preserved, and presented.
Curated by Chinyere Obieze, Furen Dai, and Sam Hopkins under the artistic direction of Folakunle Oshun, the event brings together contemporary artistic practices that examine unseen narratives and alternative forms of knowledge. A major highlight is the launch of the Àkéte Collection, envisioned as a significant public international collection of modern and contemporary African art.
The programme also includes the inaugural Curatorial Lab Lagos, a three-day educational and experimental platform led by Adam Szymczyk. Through exhibitions, discussions, research, and special programmes, the Lagos Biennial offers an engaging platform for exploring contemporary art, cultural memory, and new models of artistic and institutional practice.
