British architecture firm Foster + Partners has completed Ferring Pharmaceuticals’ headquarters with a cantilevered roof canopy in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Design Features
The building is located in a pivotal waterfront location next to the Øresund crossing, just north of Copenhagen International Airport.
Building was named Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S.
The site is surrounded by a predominantly low rise development, and the building offers great views of Malmö and the Swedish coast – where the company was founded.
This project was driven by the vision of client Frederic Poulsen, from the choice of the exceptional site to the global aspirations and the role it can play.
The building is located on a large plinth to serve as a defense against potential flooding.

The design also incorporates sturdy street furniture and a resilient landscaping, which responds to the harsh marine environment.
The studio aims to create a balance between the lightweight glass building and the heavy plinth below.
Design shape
Due to the building’s lightweight structure, it gives the impression of “floating” on top of the plinth.
All programs are distributed over six stacked floors, while the roof canopy is cantilevered to further capture the surrounding views, creating self-shaded spaces on each floor.
As this also creates a dynamic space within the building, the triangular architectural form is driven by the shape of the site, surrounded by water on all sides.
The studio also created a spacious lobby in the heart of the building to integrate a full height wall with views of Sweden.

In addition to an entrance lobby, restaurant, and lounge space,
as well as dedicated conference facilities and space for social events.
Lobby edges are designed to be used flexibly so that staff can easily and efficiently reconfigure these spaces.
By moving the seats and tables to different locations.
The floors above are accessed via distinctive staircases or glass elevators that further energize the lobby space.
Conceived as individual and quiet work spaces, offices and laboratories are arranged on the edges, taking advantage of views and natural light.
On the other hand, there are more collaborative meeting spaces towards the center,
overlooking the overhead-lit lobby.
As well as other social spaces, creating a vibrant core to the building throughout each level.

The new headquarters also embodies the company’s core values, and reflects the open and collaborative working style that nurtured it.
And their employees are delighted to work in such a dynamic and generous building – with a true social heart” at Ferring Pharmaceuticals.
Design components
The main components of the facade are designed horizontally to match the low-rise urban fabric in the surrounding area.
The studio integrates the technical plant and the building core into the shape of the cantilevered roof,
giving it an elegant appearance.
The geometry of the lobby ceiling is a glass plexiglass dome found in the form,
which reflects the forces acting on it, allowing for thin and lightweight structural members.
It also allows daylight into the interior spaces, creating an upscale, light-filled workplace.
Each triple-glazed panel is cold-folded to create the building’s stunning glass dome.
