Competition Brief

The Golden Pin Design Award is an annual international design competition established in 1981 in Taiwan. Organized by the Industrial Development Administration (IDA) of Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and executed by the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), it is one of Asia’s most institutionally grounded design awards. The 2026 global call for entries officially opened on 11 March 2026.

The award opened to international entries in 2014 and has since attracted global brands and design teams including Grab, Starbucks Coffee Singapore, NIKKEN SEKKEI Japan, ASUS, Pegatron, ZTE, and Midea. It operates two parallel programs: the Golden Pin Design Award for commercially launched work, and the Golden Pin Concept Design Award for unrealized concepts. Both run concurrently with the same registration window.

Intent

The Golden Pin Design Award is positioned as the most influential design award targeting the Huaren (Chinese-speaking) market, while simultaneously serving as an international platform for validating design excellence in the broader Asian market. It evaluates commercially available products and completed design projects rather than conceptual proposals, which distinguishes it from many other award platforms that accept any work regardless of market status.

The award connects to broader conversations around how sustainable design and design thinking can cross industry boundaries. Recent Best Design of the Year winners have included a Michelin-starred restaurant’s experiential dining concept and a train tourism experience integrating Alishan railway culture, demonstrating the award’s openness to cross-disciplinary and spatial design thinking.

Purpose

Beyond recognition, the award provides tangible business benefits. Winners gain the right to use the Golden Pin Design Mark on product packaging and marketing materials. Outstanding works are exhibited at the annual Golden Pin Design Award Exhibition and through touring exhibitions across Asia. The award has a business matching platform connecting winning designs with B2B buyers. It also partners with Japan’s Good Design Store Tokyo by NOHARA, giving winning products a retail presence in the Japanese market.

Participants receive jury feedback from the preliminary selection regardless of whether they advance, which is an uncommon benefit in commercial award programs of this scale and gives the platform genuine educational value for designers entering the Asian market context.

Requirements

Entries for the Golden Pin Design Award must be products commercially available on the market or communication, spatial, or integration design works completed and put into use by 31 December 2026. The award is open to business owners and design teams. Previously winning designs cannot be re-entered.

For the Golden Pin Concept Design Award, entries must be innovative concepts not yet realized as of 31 December 2026. This track is open to students, designers, and companies.

Both tracks accept entries across four main categories: Product Design, Communication Design, Spatial Design, and Integration Design. Entries can be submitted to multiple categories, with a separate fee per category. Both Chinese and English descriptions are required for all entries.

The selection process runs in three stages. The Preliminary Selection is conducted online in June. Entries that advance proceed to the Secondary Selection in August where physical works are reviewed. Final Selection follows in late August. The award ceremony is held in late November in Taipei.

Jury

The jury is composed of leading international experts from design, industry, and academia. Past jurors have included Tom Dixon (UK), Francine Houben of Mecanoo (Netherlands), Ahn Sang-soo (Korea), Uwe Cremering CEO of iF International Forum Design, Naoto Fukasawa, Kashiwa Sato, Taku Satoh, and Oki Sato. The 2026 jury announced so far includes:

  1. Siam Attariya — Award-winning graphic designer, Thailand.
  2. Yuki Uchida — Designer at Re:public Inc.; regional revitalization advisor certified by Japan’s Cabinet Office.
  3. Yoshiaki Osada — Managing Director of GK Design Shanghai, under Japan’s GK Design Group.
  4. Michael Lanz — Renowned product designer and design strategist; longtime juror for the iF Design Award.

The full 2026 jury lineup will be announced in the coming months. Jurors evaluate entries individually and provide feedback to all preliminary selection participants.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Golden Pin Design Award carries a level of institutional credibility that separates it from most commercial online recognition platforms. Organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and executed by the Taiwan Design Research Institute since 1981, it has over four decades of documented history and genuine governmental backing. The jury is assembled from internationally recognized figures including past jurors of the caliber of Tom Dixon, Francine Houben, Naoto Fukasawa, and Kashiwa Sato — names that lend serious professional weight to the evaluation process. The three-stage selection process, including physical review of actual products in the Secondary and Final Selection phases, makes this a genuinely rigorous evaluation rather than a purely online recognition exercise. The requirement that entries be commercially launched products or completed projects (not just concepts) is a meaningful quality filter that distinguishes it from awards that accept any work in any state. The Concept Design Award runs separately for unrealized ideas and offers cash prizes of approximately USD $9,300 each to three winners, which is a rare and substantive financial benefit in a sector where most platforms offer none. For architects and spatial designers, the Spatial Design category covering residential spaces, commercial spaces, public spaces, architecture, landscape design, and temporary installations is directly relevant. The entry fee of NT$7,000 (approx. USD $215) at early bird rates is competitive for an award of this institutional standing.

Final Thoughts

The Golden Pin Design Award is one of the few truly institutionally grounded design awards in Asia with verified governmental organization, a named international jury of genuine standing, a multi-stage physical review process, and a documented 45-year track record. It is not a commercial platform built for revenue — it is a state-backed design promotion mechanism with real market benefits for winners.

For architects, interior designers, landscape designers, and spatial practitioners looking to validate their work within the Asian market specifically, the Spatial Design and Integration Design categories make this award directly applicable. The business matching platform, exhibition presence, and potential Good Design Store Tokyo placement give winners access to market channels that few other design awards can offer.

The key constraint is the eligibility requirement: only commercially launched work or completed projects qualify for the main award. Teams with strong concept work but no built or commercialized output should consider the Concept Design Award track instead, which carries cash prizes and has its own merit.
