Architecture Competition: Design Residency on Governors Island

Applications for the 2024 Spring and Summer Residency programs on Governors Island, which run from March 1–May 17 and June 1–August 17, 2024, respectively, are now being accepted by the Institute for Public Architecture (IPA). Live and work in a cooperative setting for eleven weeks in a landmarked structure right in the middle of New York Harbor.

Architects in their early to mid-career stages, urbanists, landscape architects, designers, and those dedicated to the public domain across all fields are encouraged to submit applications. The program will welcome applicants who bring their own projects and interests.

After the Coast Guard left the island in 1996, IPA Fellows are some of the first non-military citizens to live there. The exceptional historic, environmental, and urban features available to fellows will include easy ferry access to waterfront districts in Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan. The IPA is one of the more than twenty nonprofits devoted to the arts, culture, education, and environment that work on the Island. Together, they create a distinctive community that engages a varied and expanding audience of around a million tourists each year.
