Studio Ellsinger has designed Hee House, a small holiday cabin situated near the beach at Heestrand on Sweden’s west coast. Characterized by a distinctive hat-shaped aluminium roof, the cabin reflects an innovative approach that maximizes its small footprint while harmonizing with the surrounding wilderness.

A Tiny Footprint with Vertical Expansion

The cabin measures just seven meters by seven meters but grows vertically, utilizing its steep-pitched roof and gables clad in untreated aluminium. This design ensures protection against the region’s harsh weather conditions, including wind and rain, while also capturing attention with its unique aesthetic.

Inspired by Studio Ellsinger’s previous work, the cabin’s design philosophy emphasizes minimal impact on the environment. Its elevated and compact structure demonstrates how thoughtful design can make the most of limited space.

Interior Features: Multifunctional Spaces

Inside, Hee House’s steep roof creates a spacious living area with a loft. The loft accommodates a children’s sleeping space, a workspace, and a sofa bed, all of which can be sectioned off with a large curtain.

The ground floor features an open-plan living and kitchen area with large windows offering views of the surrounding pines. A custom-built wood-burning stove and an oversized bookshelf serve as both functional and design focal points. The interior is clad in untreated pine, creating a warm and simple atmosphere, while contrasting red tiles highlight the kitchen floor.

Maritime-Inspired Details

Paying homage to the cabin’s coastal location, the front door and loft windows feature circular glass prisms inspired by old sailing ships, which used similar elements to spread light below deck. This detail not only adds character but also enhances natural lighting inside the cabin.

Structural Innovation

One of the challenges of Hee House’s design was constructing the steep roof without visible beams or bracing, which could detract from the ceiling’s clean aesthetic. This was achieved using a horizontal glulam frame positioned atop the exterior walls, supporting the roof while maintaining the cabin’s open interior.

A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Hee House exemplifies how traditional materials and innovative design can coexist to create a functional yet visually intriguing space. The aluminium-clad exterior, compact footprint, and multipurpose interiors demonstrate Studio Ellsinger’s commitment to design that respects both form and function.
