Competition Brief

The Sanya Dadonghai Urban Renewal Competition 2026 is an international design challenge which requires participants to create urban planning and architectural designs for the Dadonghai district of Sanya in China. The competition requires participants to develop urban renewal plans which achieve three objectives by improving coastal district spatial quality and livability through their tourism development and ecological protection and community engagement solutions.

Intent

The purpose of this initiative is to research new methods for urban renewal in a coastal tourist city which combine sustainable design with public space enhancement and heritage conservation. The competition seeks to discover methods which will convert neglected spaces into active public areas that serve all members of the community.

Purpose

The purpose is to generate visionary conceptual plans and design proposals for the district. Participants should develop solutions which address urban design and transportation systems and environmental sustainability and public infrastructure while respecting the local cultural and ecological and economic environment.

Requirements

Participants must submit conceptual master plans and design proposals for the Dadonghai area which must evaluate three elements: urban mobility and public space programming and architectural interventions and environmental strategies. The design needs to combine natural landscapes with coastal elements and community spaces. The competition welcomes students and professionals and multidisciplinary teams from all over the world to participate.

Jury

The organizers have not disclosed official jury members at the time of publication so no verified list of jurors exists.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The judging panel of the competition remains undisclosed to the public because the private platform which runs the event maintains its operational procedures without sharing information about its activities. The international competition which requires urban design concepts for coastal regeneration works as a research project that helps participants create their portfolios instead of serving as an academic or professional assignment. The awards provide cash prizes and recognition to winners, but the total number of participants determines which prizes will be awarded, which does not match the design work needed to achieve those results. The actual value that participants receive from the program lies in their ability to practice development work and build their professional portfolios, while the jury members’ knowledge remains unknown and cannot be proven.

Conclusion

The Sanya Dadonghai Urban Renewal Competition 2026 offers solutions to urban renewal problems which arise in coastal areas by promoting sustainable practices and community involvement and developing new approaches to urban design. The competition achieves better access through its low registration fees, yet the prize distribution process depends on the number of participants, while the competition’s evaluation process lacks transparency because the jury members have not been publicly disclosed. The competition functions as a platform for conceptual research which helps participants develop their professional portfolios instead of serving as a mechanism to deliver actual project results.
