The Kaira Looro Architecture Competition 2025 focuses on addressing the significant challenges faced by rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa regarding access to quality educational facilities. This year’s competition invites architects, students, designers, engineers, and young professionals worldwide to design an innovative Nursery School model tailored to the unique needs of these regions. The aim is to create a safe and inclusive environment that fosters children’s well-being and holistic development.

Education is a fundamental right, essential for nurturing cognitive, emotional, and social skills. However, the lack of adequate infrastructure deprives many children in these areas of the opportunity to grow and thrive. The competition challenges participants to provide sustainable, cost-effective solutions that integrate education, socialization, play, and exploration into cohesive, welcoming spaces.

Objective

The primary goal of this competition is to design a Nursery School model that blends sustainability, creativity, and community empowerment. Participants are encouraged to use local materials, sustainable construction practices, and engage the local community in the building process. Designs should address the specific challenges of building in rural areas, such as limited access to skilled labor and heavy machinery, while remaining cost-effective and environmentally conscious.

The proposed Nursery School must encompass classrooms, offices, educational and play areas, a medical room, a dining hall, storage, and sanitary facilities, all within a maximum area of 650 square meters. The resulting project should serve as both a vibrant space for children and a reference point for sustainable development in the community.
