Competition Brief

Intent

The Model Young Package Competition 2026 operates as a worldwide packaging design contest which targets emerging designers and students and professional creative designers. The program invites participants to develop innovative paper-based packaging concepts that combine functional performance, sustainability, and strong visual communication.

Purpose

The 2026 theme “Unpacking Taboo” encourages designers to rethink packaging as a social communication tool. The participants must create packaging designs which help establish common ground for sensitive topics while preserving their packaging products actual usability and manufacturing methods and their capacity to protect the environment. The competition defines packaging as a technical solution which also operates as a cultural artistic medium.

Requirements

Participants must submit a recyclable paper or fibre-based packaging prototype. The complete submission requires digital upload of a single PDF which contains project title and up to five prototype images or renders and a structural blueprint showing construction logic and a written English description explaining the concept and function. Teams of up to five members are allowed.

The competition includes two participation tracks:

  • High School category for students aged approximately 15–21 not enrolled in university
  • Unlimited category for university students, adult learners, and professional designers

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Model Young Package Competition 2026 establishes packaging design as a technical field and cultural practice which extends beyond traditional branding methods to enable social interaction. The competition organized through industry support from the Czech packaging cluster and Model Group focuses on assessing recyclable fiber materials and their structural design capabilities and their production methods. The competition uses two categories to enable accessibility to secondary students and professional designers while the prototype requirement establishes authentic production requirements. The additional Professional Challenge component improves industry connections which makes the program suitable for candidates who want hands-on experience and portfolio development and entry-level work in packaging creation instead of conceptual design work.

Critical Conclusion

The Model Young Package Competition 2026 stands out for linking packaging design with social messaging rather than treating it purely as commercial branding. The Professional Challenge stage establishes an uncommon connection between student research activities and actual manufacturing processes while the focus on fiber-based materials and practical production capabilities keeps proposals within industry standards. The competition benefits designers at the beginning of their careers who want to build their networks in the European packaging industry and who want to learn about sustainable product development systems.
