Ken Yang Pioneer of Green Environmental Design,

Born in Malaysia in 1948, he is a Malaysian architect,

well-known author and environmentalist, best known for his ecological architecture.

Young is a pioneer of green design, in which the environment is the master planner, has been designing in the environmental field since 1971.

Yang is one of the fifty people who could save the world, a title bestowed upon him by The Guardian.

He established Yeang Hamzah & Yeang Company, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and had other offices in London and Beijing.

Birth and upbringing:

Young grew up in a modern tropical home designed by Iverson van Setern, and attended Penang Free School.

Academic Study:

Keane earned his qualifications in architecture from the Architectural Association School of London.

He completed an internship at STS Leong in Singapore, then returned to London to complete his AA certification under Peter Cook.

Ken Yang then obtained his postgraduate studies in the Department of Architecture from the University of Cambridge, in 1972.

practical life:

Kane started doing illustration and graphic work on his own for AD, AAQ, and AA magazines.

His PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge was titled “A Theoretical Framework for Integrating Environmental Considerations in the Design and Planning of the Built Environment”.

He then received several degrees, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Sheffield, and a doctorate with honors from the University of Malaya.

He also holds a Doctor of Science with honors from Taylors University, Malaysia.

His Architectural Works:

Yang has designed more than 12 high-rise buildings considered ecological, and several thousand terraced homes.

He has also designed more than 2 million square feet of interior design space, and has many master environmental plans and eco-city designs.

Overall he has completed more than a hundred construction projects of all kinds around the world.

His projects put him at the forefront of the list of famous architects.

The most important projects built by Ken Yang:

  1. Rooftop House, is an experimental climate responsive home that rethought the design of a low energy building based on passive bioclimate.
  2. The Messinaga Tower Lighthouse in Malaysia in 1992, is a climate responsive tower.

It embodies Yang’s key principles in bioclimatic skyscraper design.

  1. Kowloon Waterfront Master Plan – Hong Kong in 1998.

It is a green master plan where Yang developed the concept of green ecological infrastructure and the new use of “eco cells”.

  1. The National Library of Singapore It is a green library tower 120 meters high.

With large landscaped sky courtyards (40m high).

  1. SOMA Master Plan, Bangalore, India (2006)

It is a distinguished environmental master planner that adopts his innovative idea of ​​master planning for the eco-city,

As an integration of four environmental infrastructures,

with the use of ecological bridges and ecological infrastructures to enable ecological connectivity across the terrain.

  1. Liangsicheng Prize from the Architectural Association of China in 2017,
  2. BCA Green seal Award, Singapore, 2016.
  3. The Malaysian Institute of Architects Gold Medal.
  4. UIA Auguste Perret. Award
  5. Malaysian Government Award with the official title of “Dato” (2003),                          which is generally considered to be the Malaysian equivalent of OBE in the UK.
  6. Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, USA.
  7. Merdeka Prize (in the category “Environment”), from the Government of Malaysia, which is the national equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
  8. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
  9. Prince Claus Award.
