Design Philosophy: Harmony with Nature

The expansion reflects Studio Gang’s signature approach of biophilic design, using materials like cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glass to blur boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The buildings’ undulating forms echo the surrounding topography, reducing visual impact and promoting energy efficiency. A standout feature is the central stairway crafted from exposed concrete, which doubles as a social gathering space and a nod to UCSC’s Brutalist heritage.

Sustainability at the Core

Collaborating with Atelier Ten (sustainability consultants) and Joni L. Janecki Landscape Architects, the team prioritized:

  • Carbon-neutral construction via locally sourced timber.
  • Stormwater management through permeable paving and native plantings.
  • Passive heating/cooling strategies to minimize reliance on HVAC systems.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

Studio Gang’s Kresge College expansion masterfully balances ecological sensitivity with modernist aesthetics, creating a model for campus design that prioritizes both sustainability and student well-being. However, the project’s reliance on high-cost materials like custom CLT may raise questions about scalability for public institutions with tighter budgets. Despite this, its success in revitalizing a 1960s campus while preserving the spirit of place sets a compelling precedent for future academic developments one where architecture actively nurtures learning and community.
