L+A+N+D (Landscape + Art + Nature + Design) celebrates innovative design concepts for immersive outdoor installations on a grand scale that spark imaginations, conversations, and a deeper appreciation of the natural world, fulfilling Bernheim’s mission of connecting people with nature through the lens of art.

This program invites creatives from around the world to design and build large-scale experiences that address themes such as humans’ connection to nature, biodiversity, conservation, sustainability, and climate change. Submission Details

  • Project Requirements: Projects must be ecologically responsible and designed to last 2 to 5 years outdoors.
  • Design Specifications: Submit detailed plans and sketches of the proposed installation.
  • Installation Guidelines: Ensure the installation is able to withstand outdoor conditions in Kentucky.

How to Join

  1. Create an Account: Sign up on the Bernheim Forest website.
  2. Submit Your Proposal: Add your designs and plans for the installations.
  3. Selection Process: Proposals are reviewed, and selected applicants are notified in June 2025.
  4. Implementation: If selected, you will receive a stipend and construction budget to execute the project.

Judging Criteria

  • Creativity: Innovativeness of the design concept.
  • Environmental Relevance: Addressing issues like sustainability, biodiversity, and climate change.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: How well the installation engages with its natural surroundings and attracts the audience.
  • Longevity: Durability of the installation over time in outdoor conditions.

Community, Geography, and Climate

Bernheim is located in rural Clermont, Kentucky, 25 miles south of Louisville. The surrounding area offers various arts and cultural experiences, including museums, galleries, and dining. Kentucky’s climate is moderate, with four distinct seasons and rare extreme temperatures. The nearest grocery is 8 miles away, and public transportation is limited, so a car is recommended during your onsite installation period.
