MB>CO2 reflects the environmental cost of our data usage

Thijs Biersteker has created MB>CO2, an exceptional artistic effort that successfully illustrates the consequences of data center heat and electricity use.

Thijs Biersteker, a well-known environmental artist, wonderfully exhibits the art installation ‘MB>CO2′, shedding light on the hidden impact of electricity usage and data center heat, which results in a staggering 20 grams of CO2 per 1MB that we use.

During the pandemic, data usage skyrocketed, as did the emissions that resulted; from endless Netflix binges to Zoom meetings, Crypto-bro-ing, and AI algorithms.

“A Netflix night emits 40k of C02, a Zoom meeting 140m, and trading ape NFT costs 400kg of fresh air. Therefore, we need to make the move immediately,” says Biersteker.

Moreover, this amazing installation turns the C02 emitted into puffs of smoke. In fact, it emphasizes how one needs to move on to sustainable data usage in a way that draws one in.

Furthermore, we track back visitors’ data usage and measure their carbon footprint. Then, we transform it into puffs of CO2 that we blow into a living biotope, as seen by the audience.

Additionally, this eclectic piece by Woven Studio made from recyclable materials includes a Material Passport. Meaning, it’ll allow future generations to disassemble and recycle the artwork after we solve the problem of our data usage.

“The emergence of online and AI is referred to as the 5th industrial revolution – in my opinion, we must not repeat the mistakes of the previous one, which was fueled by pollution,” Biersteker adds.
