Competition Brief

The Milan Design Loft Competition 2026 is an international interior design competition organized by Terraviva Competitions. The competition challenges participants to develop new design concepts for refurbishing a loft apartment which exists in the Città Studi area of Milan that serves as an academic center for Politecnico di Milano. The challenge requires participants to develop a modern residential environment which designers can use to create their architectural work.

Intent

The intent is to explore creative interior design solutions within a constrained spatial environment. Participants need to develop ways which will help people study and socialize and rest through their design of spaces and their creative use of materials and their adaptable designs.

Purpose

The purpose is to generate proposals that balance functionality and expression while making the best use of double‑height spaces, generous natural light, and the loft’s strong spatial identity. The competition requires participants to create clear design concepts which establish new design patterns for residential spaces.

Requirements

The participants need to present their design ideas through one horizontal A1 panel display which measures 594 x 841 mm and includes a design proposal summary. The submission should demonstrate a coherent architectural idea that redefines the organization of the loft space, including possible modifications to the mezzanine and other spatial elements.

Jury

The jury includes international designers together with academic experts who specialize in architecture and spatial design and their associated disciplines. The jury panel already includes confirmed members who are Christian Gasparini from NAT Office and Chiara Sangermani from Politecnico di Milano and Hisham Youssef from Soochow University and Han Kuo from Supra‑Simplicities and Margaux Bitton from Studio Gomar and Dave Edwards from Bartlett School of Architecture and Olga Skoczylas from Lublin University of Technology and Enrique Iriso Pascual from FILO Arquitectos.

✦ ArchUp Competition Review

The Milan Design Loft Competition 2026 is organized by Terraviva Competitions, which uses an international design and academic jury of experts to establish professional validation. The competition requires participants to create a new interior design concept for a residential loft space because the project does not have plans for actual building work. The international audience can pay moderate registration fees which provide essential access to the competition while participants can expect to receive small cash awards and public recognition. The actual advantage comes from building a professional portfolio and testing different ways to design spaces plus creating new methods of interior design. The jury members possess expert knowledge which ensures proper evaluation of the competition even though it primarily serves as a conceptual test.

Conclusion

The Milan Design Loft Competition 2026 presents an interior design challenge which requires participants to transform residential areas into modern student spaces. The project requires developers to create a design solution that demonstrates both conceptual strength and design flexibility for their new space. The competition’s accessible fee structure and international jury bring credibility, though the lack of an implementation pathway means outcomes will remain conceptual. The competition provides designers and students with portfolio development opportunities, but it does not create projects which lead to professional work execution.
