A Vertical Marketplace for the Future MVRDV, in collaboration with EKUO Architects, has unveiled its visionary Market Cube in Zhubei, Taiwan**—a dynamic reinvention of the traditional market square. Combining commerce, culture, and community, this luminous structure rises as a **multi-functional civic hub, designed to adapt to the evolving needs of one of Taiwan’s fastest-growing cities.
Located near the Touqian River and the bustling Hsinchu Science Park (dubbed Taiwan’s Silicon Valley), the Market Cube is more than just a shopping destination—it’s a social condenser where food, entertainment, and urban life intersect.

Blending Tradition with Innovation:-
MVRDV’s design draws inspiration from Taiwan’s vibrant street markets, where informal stalls and lively exchanges define daily life. However, instead of replicating the past, the architects reimagine the marketplace for the 21st century, stacking diverse functions into a vertical, open-plan structure.

Key Features:–
Multi-Level Experience – From ground-floor markets to food courts, exhibition spaces, performance venues, and a rooftop farm, each floor offers a distinct atmosphere.
Fluid Circulation – Two exterior escalators wrap around the facade, connecting terraces on every level and turning movement into a visual spectacle.
Adaptable Layout – With high ceilings (5-8m) and minimal obstructions, the interior can evolve alongside Zhubei’s changing needs.
Indoor-Outdoor Flow – A pedestrian bridge links the riverside park to the food court, while unified paving blurs the line between the building and the street.

A Beacon of Light and Activity:-
The Market Cube isn’t just functional—it’s a luminous landmark. Translucent panels and color-coded lighting create a vibrant nighttime presence, while LED screens and neon signage guide visitors through its layered spaces.
Winy Maas, MVRDV Founding Partner, explains:
*“The Market Cube is like a condenser for different experiences. You never know what you’ll discover on the next floor—whether it’s a food stall, a concert, or an urban farm.”*

Designed for flexibility and longevity, the Market Cube stands as a testament to the future of public architecture**—where markets aren’t just places to shop, but **destinations to live, explore, and connect.
