Olympia Revamp Nears Completion in London

The Olympia events centre in west London, originally built in 1886, is undergoing a transformative renovation led by Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC. This ambitious project aims to breathe new life into the historic Victorian exhibition halls by creating a vibrant cultural and public destination.

A New Public Destination

The redevelopment introduces an elevated public realm featuring rooftop bars, restaurants, and open spaces, accessible via escalators from street level. These additions aim to attract both event attendees and the wider community, making Olympia more inclusive and engaging.

Key elements of the revamp include two hotels, a 1,575-seat theatre, a 4,000-capacity live music venue, and high-rise offices with outdoor terraces. The design strategically integrates these new functions with the historic fabric of the site.

Overcoming Past Challenges

According to Heatherwick Studio partner Elliot Postma, the original Olympia building was unwelcoming to the public and heavily constrained by previous expansions. The redevelopment seeks to open the site, transforming it from a “fortress” into a cultural hub.

The kilometre-long facade, once largely inaccessible, now invites the public into its elevated spaces. The pleated glazing and curved canopy elements echo the Victorian structure’s architectural features, ensuring harmony between old and new.

Vision for the Future

The transformation is set to redefine Olympia’s role in west London. Its elevated street, complete with views of the city, and its mix of cultural, leisure, and business amenities, promise to make it a landmark destination.

SPPARC founder Trevor Morriss emphasizes the project’s alignment with the original Victorian ambition, stating that the redesign builds upon Olympia’s legacy as a bold and innovative exhibition space.

Completion is expected in the second half of 2025, marking a new chapter in the history of this iconic venue.
