The 23-storey Pan Pacific Orchard, a skyscraper in Singapore designed by architecture studio WOHA, has been awarded the prestigious Best Tall Building Worldwide title by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The award recognizes the building as the world’s best new tall building, highlighting its innovative blend of urban design and environmental sustainability.
A Hotel in Nature
Located in Singapore’s renowned Orchard Road district, this 350-room hotel features four large planted terraces that are carefully integrated into its rectangular form. The CTBUH praised the building as a “hotel in nature,” noting its strong alignment with Singapore’s sustainable vision. The planted terraces transform the traditional high-rise into a green space that boasts a green plot ratio of over 300 per cent, contributing to the city’s biodiversity.
Sustainable Urban Development
Each of the four terraces within the Pan Pacific Orchard is themed – forest, beach, garden, and cloud – and serves as a hub for outdoor amenities while aiding natural ventilation throughout the building. These terraces, supported by corner columns covered in plants, allow for cross-ventilation and provide shaded spaces for hotel guests.
WOHA’s founding director Mun Summ Wong remarked, “This project demonstrates that sustainability and hospitality can go hand-in-hand, and that skyscrapers can serve as green lungs within dense urban environments.”
Recognition for Innovation
In addition to the Best Tall Building Worldwide, Pan Pacific Orchard also won Best Tall Building 100-199 Meters by CTBUH. This accolade comes alongside other celebrated skyscrapers, including One Za’abeel in Dubai and Brooklyn Tower in New York.
