Reset: Towards a New Commons

New Commons المشاع الجديد

People are more isolated from one another in modern American culture based on aptitude, age, income, and religious beliefs. The urban fabric of cities, suburbs, and rural areas intentionally and unintentionally isolate certain groups from broader communities by structuring spaces to meet particular requirements. These divisions have only been made worse by several interrelated crises. Including the COVID-19 pandemic, pervasive structural racism, and escalating political polarization.

Reset: Towards a New Commons seeks to start discussions that encourage more varied and inclusive approaches to community development. The exhibition addresses the significance of barrier-free environments and techniques centered on “Universal Design,” considering how places can develop for all rather than constructing customized facilities for specific needs.

Four projects created by interdisciplinary design teams will take up the majority of the exhibition. One will focus on New York City, one on Cincinnati, Ohio, and two on the San Francisco Bay Area. These projects were the choice of an advisory committee following an open call for proposals in the spring of 2021. The projects aim to create spaces that promote new ways of collaborating and more all-encompassing methods of inclusion, with a focus on reducing barriers based on age, race, and ability.
