Saudi Arabia has announced the start of the driverless monorail project in Riyadh, scheduled to begin before the end of 2025 within the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD).

Project Details

The monorail is currently in its design phase, with construction expected to start in the last quarter of this year. According to Faddy Al-Aql, Chief Asset Delivery Officer at KAFD, the system will have the capacity to carry up to 3,500 passengers per hour, marking a significant addition to the district’s transport network.

Integration with the 10-Minute City Vision

The project is aligned with the 10-minute city concept, which ensures that all destinations can be reached on foot within ten minutes. The monorail will be supported by suspended pedestrian bridges, connecting every building in the district, including direct links to the KAFD metro station.

Timeline

  • Design phase: ongoing through 2025
  • Construction start: Q4 2025
  • Trial operations: early 2027
  • Public commissioning: later in 2027

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

The article outlines Riyadh’s monorail project as a transformative addition to the King Abdullah Financial District. The visual narrative suggests suspended pedestrian bridges weaving across the skyline, shaping spatial dynamics and reinforcing the 10-minute city vision. Yet, one may ask whether the design sufficiently engages with cultural identity and sustainability, or if it remains confined to functional efficiency alone. While the article leaves aspects of contextual relevance underexplored, the project still stands as a strategic step toward integrated mobility solutions, offering Riyadh a forward-looking model in urban transport development.
