In August 2025, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the completion of a comprehensive plan, carried out in collaboration with Keolis–MHI, to modernize wayfinding signage across all Dubai Metro stations. The initiative is part of the city’s broader efforts to improve the daily experience of public transport users.

A project designed for commuters

The upgrade covered both the Red and Green lines, with nearly 9,000 signs installed or replaced throughout the network. The work required around 11,000 hours to complete, resulting in clearer navigation within stations and smoother passenger movement.

Key changes introduced

The improvements include:

  • Highlighting exit signs in bright yellow boxes to increase visibility.
  • Adding new floor stickers and directional indicators to help passengers reach the correct platforms more easily.
  • Introducing etiquette reminders in waiting areas and corridors, encouraging users to follow public transport manners and ensuring a more comfortable journey.

Architectural and design dimension

Beyond its operational scope, the project carries a distinct architectural and design aspect. The placement, color coding, and integration of signage within the interior spaces of stations reflect principles of environmental design and contribute directly to the spatial experience of commuters. By improving sightlines and flow within complex transit spaces, the system makes navigation more intuitive and user-friendly.

Official statement

According to Hassan Al Mutawa, Director of Rail Operations at RTA, the project forms part of the authority’s strategy to continuously develop public transport services. He emphasized that the goal was to make commuting faster, easier, and more efficient for daily riders.

Completed implementation

With the plan now fully implemented, Dubai Metro stations are equipped with clearer, more organized signage, strengthening both the functional and spatial identity of the network.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

The article presents the Dubai Metro signage upgrade as a design intervention centered on clarity and navigational flow. Images highlight the use of yellow exit markers, combined with floor graphics and suspended signs that choreograph passenger movement. While functionally effective, the narrative overlooks deeper discussion on aesthetic cohesion or cultural integration within the station interiors. Does the scheme remain purely operational, or can it evolve into a spatial identity reflecting Dubai’s urban character? Still, the project provides a tangible improvement in commuter experience and reinforces sustainable strategies for public transport spaces.
