John Outram Associates (JOA) created the unique postmodern home Sphinx Hill, which is now the youngest listed building in the United Kingdom with a Grade II listing. The Oxfordshire home, which was finished in 1999, is well-known for its Egyptian-inspired architecture, which reflects the tastes of the couple who commissioned it.
Architectural Design and Features
The varied front and symbolic design aspects of this two-story residence are perfect examples of postmodern architecture. According to Historic England, it is “a tour-de-force of domestic post-modernism.” The three vibrant volumes that make up the front are symmetrically aligned and have barrel-vaulted roofs on top. An attic aperture in the center volume is fashioned to represent a massive Horus eye. Terracotta circles paired with black column capitals resemble the sun’s rising hieroglyph.
The centerpiece of the interior design of the house is a cross-vaulted dining room with Egyptian limestone flooring. Boldly colored columns, bronze accents, and mosaics all come together to create an intricately decorated interior that stays true to the Egyptian motif.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The goal of Historic England’s listing is to save the building against insensitive renovations or demolition in order to preserve its distinctive architectural legacy. This choice comes after the property was sold in December 2022 for £2.3 million. Around the time of the listing, founder John Outram celebrated his 90th birthday and expressed his happiness that Sphinx Hill, one of the last projects his practice completed in the 20th century, had gained recognition.
Context and Legacy
The listing of Sphinx Hill highlights its importance in British architecture and demonstrates the lasting attractiveness of postmodern design. The home is situated next to other noteworthy JOA projects, like London’s Temple of Storms pumping station. Supported by the Twentieth Century Society, the listing seeks to preserve Sphinx Hill’s architectural integrity so that it can continue to stand as a tribute to the rich, creative design of John Outram Associates.
Sphinx Hill represents a turning point in the preservation of postmodern architectural legacy in the UK, now acknowledged for both its innovative architecture and cultural significance.
