The popularity of mycelium as a biomaterial for exploratory applications has significantly grown in 2024. From luxury fashion houses to student exhibitions, and from packaging and clothing to building materials, it seems that our future might be fungal. While this self-growing, biodegradable material offers massive environmental benefits and scalable solutions, the project that captivated everyone this year stood out for its creativity and wonder.
What is Mycelium?
Mycelium is a biodegradable material known for its flexibility and wide range of applications. It can be used in fashion, packaging, construction, and many other industries.
The Founding and Vision of MycoWorks
San Francisco-based biotech company MycoWorks was founded in 2013 by sculptor Philip Ross and artist-poet Sophia Wang. Their mission is to develop mycelium into materials that inspire brands, designers, and artists. Collaborating with the design agency Paragone, MycoWorks introduced its latest patented mycelium derivative, known as “Reishi,” to seven female artists and designers.
The “Mycelium Muse” Exhibition
The works of these artists were unveiled in an exhibition titled “Mycelium Muse” during the inaugural “Design Miami/Paris” in October. The collection showcased innovative designs utilizing Reishi, highlighting the immense potential of this product.

Features of Reishi Material
Reishi has a malleable texture that blends leather and textile properties, making it easy to dye and emboss. This makes it an ideal material for creating furniture, lighting, and artworks. The exhibited collection demonstrated the beauty and versatility of the material, leaving a lasting impression.
The Future of Mycelium in Various Industries
Unlike traditional perceptions of mycelium as a spongy, clumpy material, Reishi stands out with its exceptional beauty and exciting possibilities. With growing awareness of sustainability and aesthetics, mycelium is poised to become a key material in numerous industries.
Beauty attracts, and nothing propels a market forward faster than love.
