TerraViva Competitions presents THE GOLDEN SAND WATERFRONT, a transformative architecture competition aimed at rejuvenating the Lungomare of Lignano Sabbiadoro, turning it into a vibrant public space for both residents and seasonal tourists. Known for its golden sandy beaches and clear waters, Lignano Sabbiadoro is a popular destination in northeast Italy. Despite the harmonious connection between the city and the beach, certain areas, particularly along the Riviera, lack a cohesive identity.

Competition Brief

The challenge of THE GOLDEN SAND WATERFRONT is to redesign a public axis that promotes sustainable mobility and raises environmental awareness. This involves a complete renewal of the Lungomare Riccardo Riva, the stretch of wild landscape between the coastal road and the beach, Unicef Park, and the public space surrounding the boat crossing at Passo Barca. Participants are tasked with creating a master plan that reimagines these spaces, bringing them into harmony with the surrounding landscape while establishing clear connections between the seafront and the town’s interior.

Jury

An esteemed international jury will evaluate the proposals, including Pietro Chiodi and Paloma Herrero (Stefano Boeri Architetti), Sandra Baggerman (MVRDV), and Anna Cabrera Hens (Barcelona City Council), among others. Winning projects will propose innovative and sustainable designs that contribute to the environmental and social regeneration of the area.

Prizes

The competition offers up to 12,000 € in prize money. This includes a 7,000 € prize for first place, with additional rewards for second and third places, as well as several gold mentions and honorable mentions.

Guidelines

Participants are required to submit three A1 landscape-oriented panels, including all necessary visuals, such as sketches, diagrams, plans, 3D renderings, and more. A brief text (250 to 500 words) should accompany the panels, outlining the project proposal. The competition is open to students, architects, designers, urbanists, and anyone interested in architecture and design, either individually or as a team.

Schedule

The competition opens on October 9th, 2023, with early registration available until December 11th, 2023. Standard registration continues until January 12th, 2024, and late registration closes on February 9th, 2024, the same day as the final submission deadline. Results will be announced on March 4th, 2024.
