Troll’s Tongue Observation Platform Competition

Home » Competitions » Troll’s Tongue Observation Platform Competition

Buildner is excited to present the Troll’s Tongue Observation Platform competition, an international architecture challenge that takes inspiration from Trolltunga, one of Norway’s most iconic natural landmarks. This competition invites architects, designers, and visionaries from around the world to create an observation platform that enhances visitors’ experiences while maintaining harmony with the site’s natural beauty.

Trolltunga, known as “The Troll’s Tongue,” is a striking cliff in Norway’s Hardanger region, projecting horizontally over Lake Ringedalsvatnet at an altitude of about 700 meters. Renowned for its panoramic views of fjords and mountains, Trolltunga attracts thousands of visitors annually.

The competition calls for designing a 3×6 meter platform situated on a flat section of the cliff. This platform should allow visitors to safely enjoy the breathtaking scenery 700 meters below. The proposed design must integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape, using sustainable materials and innovative approaches.

The rugged terrain surrounding Trolltunga, marked by alpine vegetation and untouched wilderness, poses unique challenges. Participants must consider the area’s exposure to varying weather conditions, including sunlight, mist, wind, and snow, to ensure durable and environmentally sensitive design solutions.

This competition is open to everyone—individuals or teams of up to four members—with no professional qualifications required. Submissions and communication must be in English.
