UNI.xyz and INJ Architects in New Collaboration to Host ‘The White Lands’ Competition,
INJ Architects in collaboration with UNI.xyz is hosting the “The White Lands” competition, which is intended for architecture students and young professionals.
The competition aims to develop ideas for a housing project for pilgrims in Mina, near Mecca.
The White Lands is a one-stage international architecture competition organized by UNI in partnership with INJ Architects in Jeddah.
It is open to all architecture students,
young architects and young professionals interested in architecture design.
Competition goals
Competition participants will be asked to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a housing unit for pilgrims in the city of Mina near Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
The competition comes on the heels of an ambitious plan for the Vision 2030 agenda by the Saudi government.
A fundamental aspect of this vision is to make Saudi Arabia an important commercial and cultural intersection between the Western and Eastern worlds.
The government hopes to expand the frontiers of inclusion and progress while expanding the bandwidth of the pilgrimage to more than 10 million pilgrims.
The government is also constantly keen on renewing and expanding Hajj facilities to accommodate pilgrims, with their number increasing.
To ensure that pilgrims are provided with the best Saudi hospitality during their visit to the Holy Land.
Upgrading mosques and transportation facilities to accommodate pilgrims have already begun.
Where the Hajj remains the main source of livelihood for the majority of the population of Mecca.
The city of Mina provides five days of pilgrims who make up much of the hospitality, tourism, transportation, food and beverages,
In addition to retail and many small businesses to get started.
The tent city of Mina, the vital backbone of this entire industry, has become an example for religious gathering from all over the world.
Herein lies the challenge: how to reinvent the tent city of Mina for the future?
The length of stay requires air-conditioned, fire-resistant, hygienic and progressive living arrangements.
The participants in the “White Lands” are expected to try to elevate the pilgrims’ experience as much as possible by whatever means they may find necessary.

Graduates in the following years, 2021, 2020, 2019, or graduating in 2022, are allowed to participate in the competition.
Existing students, young professionals and professionals can also enter the competition.
Winners will be awarded a cash reward of approximately $20,000 and the opportunity to discuss and develop these with INJ Architects.
