Welded Loop: Experimental Shoes Crafted from a Single Material

Home » Building Materials » Welded Loop: Experimental Shoes Crafted from a Single Material

Dutch designers Suzanne Oude Hengel and Joris de Groot have introduced an innovative shoe concept called Welded Loop, created entirely from a single material: thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This recyclable material enables the production of every shoe component, including knitted uppers, 3D-printed soles, and intricate details, eliminating the need for glues or additional materials.

A Vision for Mono-Material Footwear

Welded Loop aims to simplify footwear design by addressing the complexity of multi-material construction. The TPU components are welded together using high-frequency welding, a precise method that enhances durability while reducing environmental impact.

“Our challenge was to make a very clear and simple shoe using a single material,” explained de Groot, highlighting the project’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The Craftsmanship Behind Welded Loop

The collaboration between the two designers combines distinct areas of expertise:

  • Suzanne Oude Hengel brings advanced knitting techniques through her textile design studio, Knit in Motion.
  • Joris de Groot contributes knowledge in high-frequency welding, informed by his background in designing waterproof clothing and accessories.

Using TPU yarns, the shoes are knitted into templated textiles, incorporating 3D-printed eyelets and soles. These are thermoformed and welded in three precise steps, creating a fully functional and visually striking pair of shoes.

Pushing the Boundaries of TPU

TPU, commonly used in rain gear and coated textiles, finds a new application here, leveraging its recyclable and flexible properties. The designers envision endless possibilities for TPU yarns, ranging from breathable open structures to complex mono-material designs.

Exhibition at Dutch Design Week

The prototype was showcased during Dutch Design Week 2024 as part of the Something Bigger exhibition at Schellens Fabriek. While still in its early stages, Welded Loop has attracted attention for its aesthetic appeal and potential for sustainable fashion.

Future Aspirations

The designers aim to refine their research further before commercializing the concept. They hope to collaborate with a commercial partner to bring Welded Loop to a broader market, while also continuing to explore the untapped potential of TPU yarns.

This experimental approach signals a shift toward more sustainable and innovative practices in footwear design, paving the way for a future where simplicity and functionality meet environmental responsibility.
