Wood Marsh: Rammed-Earth Peninsula House on Australian Coast

Home » News » Wood Marsh: Rammed-Earth Peninsula House on Australian Coast

Wood Marsh, an architectural studio, employed curving walls using charred timber and rammed earth in the design of Peninsula House, situated south of Melbourne. This residence, crafted to mirror Australia’s windswept coastline, showcases a distinctive design with curved elements that extend like “arms” around a driveway and a terrace with a pool. Taking inspiration from the Bass Strait coastline’s shape, the exterior texture reflects weathered forms and organic shapes reminiscent of marine life. The house features exposed rammed-earth walls creating a striking contrast with the greenery within the central courtyard. The interior adopts a dark monochrome palette, echoing the charred timber exterior, with a focus on the interplay of light and shadow on the curved surfaces. Wood Marsh’s portfolio includes previous projects like a curving apartment block and a golf club with sweeping concrete walls emerging from the surrounding coastal dunes.
