Buildings do not exist in isolation. The most effective planning takes into account the broader built environment, local culture, and available resources, showcasing the transformative potential of architecture for communities. The Regional & Urban Design Award program honors outstanding achievements in urban design, regional planning, city planning, and community development.

Since 2019, the AIA has adopted the Framework for Design Excellence as a guideline for evaluating project performance. Addressing climate action requires an integrated approach that recognizes the interdependence of people, buildings, infrastructure, and the environment. This framework outlines key elements to support such a vision during project evaluation.

While submissions are not required to address every metric within the framework, they must demonstrate their performance in relation to these principles and provide relevant narratives and metrics where applicable.
