AIANY Design Awards

Brief
AIA New York invites eligible architects and design professionals to submit work to its annual Design Awards programme. The 2027 cycle considers built architecture and interiors alongside recent projects, research and urban-design work, using four award categories and the AIA Framework for Design Excellence Common App.
Competition data
| Field | Value |
|---|---|

| Registration deadline | No separate registration deadline is announced. |
| Submission deadline | 7 December 2026. The official page does not publish an hour or time zone. |
| Entry fee | USD 120 for AIANY Associate and International Associate members; USD 230 for AIANY members in the listed eligible member classes; USD 525 for other registered architects. |

The submission PDF and Common App must be anonymous: identifying architects or designers in images, plans, narratives, file names or supplemental materials triggers disqualification. The official deadline gives only a date; the countdown below assumes 23:59 UTC on 7 December solely as an end-of-day reference and does not replace the organiser’s portal.
Purpose, scope and categories
The programme assesses how projects resolve formal, functional and technical requirements while addressing broader impacts such as ecological stewardship and social responsibility. Architecture and Interiors entries must have been completed after 1 January 2022. Urban Design and Projects entries must have been initiated after that date. The official eligibility pathways cover work in New York City, New York-registered architects practising in the city, and AIANY members or Corresponding members as specified; applicants should match their status to the detailed rules before paying.
| Category | Scope |
|---|---|
| Architecture | Completed buildings of any typology; registered architects only. |
| Interiors | Completed interiors, architectural work and building-component or product approaches; registered architects only. |
| Projects | Temporary structures, conceptual work, pavilions, research and practice tools. Academic-credit projects are ineligible; construction intent is not required. |
| Urban Design | Built or unbuilt work addressing environmental and urban challenges beyond the scale of one building. |
Submission requirements
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Project PDF | One PDF under 25 MB, 11 × 17 inches in landscape format, no more than 16 pages. |
| Portfolio content | Low-resolution jury-review images, clearly labelled or captioned; there is no mandatory page template. |
| Common App | The AIA Framework for Design Excellence Common App is a separate required upload; irrelevant questions may be left blank. |
| Press images | At least five high-resolution, press-ready images uploaded separately with complete credits, including photographer credits. |
| Anonymity | The PDF, Common App, images, plans, narratives, file names and supplemental materials must not identify architects or designers, except the original architect in preservation work as stated. |
| AI imagery | AI or AI-generated imagery must be clearly disclosed in the PDF and on the applicable images. |
| Method and language | Digital submission through the organiser’s application platform. The official guidelines do not state a submission language. |
Organizer and programme record
AIA New York presents this as an annual programme recognising design excellence in New York and internationally. Its official page includes an awards archive covering editions from 2017 through 2026 and states that 2027 recipients will be announced at the Jury Symposium on 11 January 2027. Selected work is scheduled for a Center for Architecture exhibition and a special spring issue of Oculus. These are recognition and publication outcomes, not a stated cash payment.
Jury and assessment
| Item | Published information |
|---|---|
| 2027 jury | Names have not yet been announced; the organiser states that the jury will be announced shortly. |
| Core assessment | Design skill and creativity in resolving each project’s formal, functional and technical requirements. |
| Broader considerations | Ecological stewardship, social responsibility and an inclusive understanding of design excellence. |
| Framework | Applicants complete relevant parts of the AIA Framework for Design Excellence Common App; the organiser says the Common App informs, but does not determine, the outcome. |
| Weights | No numerical scoring weights are published. |
Awards, credits and conditions
The jury may grant Citation, Merit and Honor distinctions, and may select one Best in Competition from the Honor Award recipients. Winners are scheduled for public announcement, an exhibition and editorial coverage. The rules require accurate project credits and specific releases when work was completed as an employee or consultant. The published page does not state a refund policy for entry fees, a detailed intellectual-property licence or a cash-prize tax treatment; no cash prize or implementation contract is announced.
✦ ArchUp Competition Review
This is an award programme rather than a single-site design brief, so the decisive task is editorial: entrants must make a project’s own objectives legible within sixteen pages while keeping the review file anonymous. The four-category structure accommodates built work and some unbuilt research, but category and eligibility choices should be checked before payment.
The Common App adds a useful performance lens without requiring every measure to be answered. A strong submission can therefore pair a clear design argument with a small set of relevant evidence instead of treating the framework as a checklist. The material limits, separate press-image requirement and automatic anonymity rule deserve early production control.
