Tosin Oshinowo’s cmDesign Atelier studio has designed an all-white junior suite on the Lagos Peninsula,

Nigeria, accessible only by boat from the heart of the city.

Design Features

The 310 square meter suite, named Coral Pavilion,

is for a client who wants to escape the busy city life and stay in a permeable suite.

Offering an eye-catching, minimalist presence,

the Linear Suite is designed to provide a fully indoor and outdoor feel,

with the comfort of the living room set in a largely open space with dramatic views and cool airflow.

Design shape

The house extends in a linear manner, and consists of a kitchen on the east side,

a large dining area in the middle, toilets on the west side, a minibar, as well as a large sitting area,

an outdoor shower and lounge, as well as an outdoor swimming pool.

The staircase on the west side also allows you to climb the roof of the house and experience the beautiful scenery.

The house is designed as “a gathering space away from the frenetic energy of Lagos,”

according to Tosin Oshinovo.

The house features clean lines, simple architecture, soft colors,

and an elegant space that feels like you’re on a remote natural island, yet still within city limits,

serving as a nearby country location for easy day trips.

The architect designs the building to take full advantage of the directional winds,

and the studio also takes into account the tropical location of building spaces where there are stunning geometric lines of shade from the sun throughout the year.

Using a limited color palette, color becomes a major design element in the suite from the soothing waters of the pool to the olive green accents in the furniture.

And the coral pink floating pool deck may contrast elegantly with the golden-yellow sands of the beach.

Tosin Oshinowo is one of the leading Nigerian architects of her generation,

and her design approach is rooted in a distinctly African context fusing contemporary elements.

cmDesign Atelier founded her studio in 2012. She was co-coordinator for the 2019 Second Lagos Biennale,

and Tossin Ochino has appeared in the Netflix documentary Making Design series,

and was recently announced as curator for the 2023 Sharjah Architecture Triennial.
